School History

Northwood School opened its doors to students and their families in 1958.  It is located in the south west area of the city. The staff presently consists of one principal, vice principal, 38 teachers, an Early Childhood Educator, 12 Developmental Service Workers/ Educational Assistants, a secretary and part time general duty clerk, five part time school aids, and two custodians. A number of students in regular classes have been identified as having special learning needs and these are served through our learning support program. We have a full time music teacher, who provides a vocal program to students from grades one to six and instrumental music to students in grade seven and eight. As well, we have a number of parent and community volunteers who support programs and student learning in various ways.

We serve approximately 700 students, consisting of JK/SK to grade eight pupils and three classes of students with Developmental Disabilities (primary, junior and intermediate levels). We enjoy a diversified community, with many families of differing backgrounds, languages, cultures, and customs. Northwood draws its student population from a large area and about 90% of the student population is transported to and from school by bus.

Within our school, our staff and students strive to support the school's philosophy, "I make a difference". Together, we emphasize the values of excellence, cooperation, and respect. Our Student Council/Parliament activities encourage school wide participation among students. Our excellent staff is committed to serving the community in the best possible way. They continue to be active in professional activities related to new programs and materials, curriculum development, program delivery, assessment, and evaluation. Our School Council has been working actively to promote our common goals. We are proud of the sense of community spirit we have achieved at Northwood.
