FAQ's concerning Design 2000

  • What is Design 2000?

    Design 2000 was established in 1993 to provide the grade 7 & 8 students of Essex County with quality education in Design and Technology.

  • How is the centre staffed?

    There are four of us working at the centre.

  • How many students do you serve?

    About 2200, all of the grade seven & eight children are bussed to the centre. The number of students on any given day ranges from 50 to 90.

  • How often do they come?

    Five times per year, ten visits in all. The students are only allowed to take each module once

  • How many modules are there?

    Eighteen altogether, covering a wide spectrum of technologies from computer animation to food preparation to video editing. The children work independently of teacher intervention, though the staff is readily available for consultation when problems arise.

  • How is the home school involved?

    Design & Technology work is integrated into the regular curriculum by the home room teachers. A thematic unit is provided for each module area.

  • How are they evaluated?

    Their use of time, teamwork, and final products are graded by the home teacher as well as Design 2000 staff. The students grade themselves using the same criteria. Reports are sent home with the regular report card.

  • Is it an expensive program?

    The Design 2000 staff feel that there certainly is an overall savings over the traditional shop/family studies approach.
