EQAO Provincial Assessment
Public
Board Committed to Improving Student Achievement
Windsor, Ontario, September 17, 2009
The
Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released
the results of the Primary and Junior Reading, Writing and
Mathematics Assessment and the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics
written by Ontario students during the 2008-2009 school year.
In the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB)
2440 grade 3 students, 2614 grade 6 students and 2744 grade
9 students participated in the assessments.
Data from the assessments provides schools and boards with
a snapshot of information from which to plan for future programming. “We
believe in our students’ ability and have confidence
in our staff’s willingness and determination to help
all students achieve, which means not just academic achievement
but also the ability to think critically about and apply
knowledge to new and changing situations outside of the classroom,” remarks
Warren Kennedy, Director of Education. “Our data contains
many success stories. It also illuminates where progress
has been slower. It is paramount that we ensure all students
have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful.”

Overall results from the primary assessment are consistent
with those of the previous year. Junior results show an overall
gain of 8%; improvement noted in all subject areas. In
Grade 9 math, 77% of students in the academic program performed
at or above the provincial standard. This is a slight improvement
over last year’s results and mirrors the provincial
average. Though there is a 2% decrease in the Applied level
math results, GECDSB results remain above the provincial
average. All Board results continue to demonstrate a positive
achievement trend over time.
“Every student deserves the best outcome from public
education,” Superintendent Clara Howitt indicates. “Our
system will undertake in-depth analysis of achievement data
to identify areas of strengths and those areas needing improvement.
Not only is it important to find strategies for improvement,
but it is equally important to find strategies which allow
us to sustain improvement.”
