FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If a student is not identified as gifted, can he/she still enrol in Enriched classes?

Yes, if a student’s aptitude, ability or potential in a subject area can be demonstrated.

Is a recommendation to the Enriched program required if a student is not identified as gifted?

Yes. The recommendation usually comes from the classroom teacher. If a recommendation is unavailable, contact a Massey department head or the Principal to gain entrance to the program.

How does a student apply to enrol in the Enriched program?

If you are from out of district, fill out the application form available online. If you are from a feeder school, solicit a recommendation from your child’s teacher or a Massey department head or Principal. If you are already attending Massey, solicit a recommendation from your academic subject teacher, department head or Principal.

What is the difference between an Enriched course and an AP (Advanced Placement) course?

While adhering to the curriculum outlined by the Ministry of Education, Enriched courses are offered from grades 9-12 which cultivate an environment of academic excellence. The Enriched curriculum is accelerated and more demanding than the Academic course at the same grade level. Alternative teaching strategies and advanced curriculum are employed to challenge students in a variety of ways.

A certified AP course is a grade 12 course that is rigorous and advanced, preparing students for an examination in May. Many Canadian and American universities will award a first year university credit to a student who is successful on the AP examination. This course is designed to comply with the curricular requirements described by the College Board. For more information about AP, visit www.collegeboard.com. Consult individual university and college websites to determine whether they accept AP courses.

If a student is not enrolled in an AP course can he/she still take the examination?

Yes, but it is recommended that the AP course is taken as it is specifically designed to prepare students for the examination, which increases the chance of success.

How much does it cost to take an AP exam?

The fee for each examination is $100.
